In today’s day and age, it’s essential to have and maintain a social media account. Whether you’re an aspiring or professional artist, you have the chance to grow your audience at your fingertips.
To build an art career, you will need people to see your art, engage with your audience and build relationships with them. Many social media platforms are free, this means you can reach a global audience free of cost, this point alone just demonstrates how powerful, and accessible, social media’s are for everyone, not only artists.
The most important factor as an artist is having an audience. Without them, you will have no hope of getting started in this competitive industry.
What are the most important social medias for artists?
For years, Instagram has been ranked as the top online platform for both emerging and professional artists. It’s important to make your feed aesthetically pleasing- think of it as your public portfolio. You can use websites such as Canva, where you can create graphics for social media, brochures for your next art fair, even business cards and presentations!
Other content you could post are your drawings, how-to tutorials, do and do not videos, and videos of your drawing process etc. Remember to always use hashtags, look for what’s trending at the moment and include them in all of your posts. Here are a few ways you can provide value as an artist:
- Host a giveaway. This way, you can get your fans to tag their friends, share your artworks on their story and ultimately grow your audience.
- Connect and share other artists artworks
- Host Q&A’s for your audience to get to know you in a more personal way
Youtube is one of the most used search engines. Whether you want to showcase your art, give a studio tour, provide art tutorials for a specific medium or give your advice on certain topics, make sure your content stands out from the rest.
YouTube is a very competitive platform and a lot of people already make the same content, so ask yourself, what content would viewers be interested in? What makes my videos special? Are you telling them something they don’t know? Are you teaching them something? It’s important to make your videos worth your viewers time, that’s the value you are giving. Grab a pencil and paper and make a list of what you want to provide your audience with.
Facebook is a very powerful promotional tool, with over 2.80 billion users you can connect to worldwide. Don’t compare Instagram to Facebook, as the approach is totally different, it’s more professional. Create a professional page, not a profile, as you are promoting your art and your brand name. Share your website URL, your Instagram and YouTube links so viewers can access it quickly.
Start by post your drawings, engaging with your audience and building a close relationship with them. Make sure to invite all your friends and family to like and follow your page, it is very important to have a high number of likes and follows as it increases your brand credibility.
If you’re looking to broaden your reach, you can promote your Facebook page, your website or even a specific post through Business manager.
TikTok is a great tool to reach a high audience and become viral. You can reach your audience not only visually but with sound too. The music sets the tone for a piece of video content and relates to the viewer on an emotional level. You can upload 30 to 60-second videos of your artwork process, favourite materials or generally anything that people will like watching. The hashtag you use will have a huge impact on the reach. For example, the hashtag “#art” has 166.6 billion views and “#artist” has 49.3 billion views. If one video becomes viral, then it’s most likely all your future videos will appear on their feed too. Don’t underestimate TikTok’s power and how easily you can reach billions, from one day to another, you can become viral.
All social media platforms play a different part in growing your audience and making your art known worldwide, but it’s important to be consistent and work hard on your strategies. You will learn along the way and get inspired by other artists and how they do it. Don’t get discouraged by the lack of followers or views, this is just one way of growing visibility. Remember that having a website is also extremely important, click here to learn about the importance of having a website and how to create one.
